"Drawing is my first passion but I use mixed media to achieve a variety of effects. I combine a mix of traditional media but often adopt digital tools to develop the final outcome. My inspiration comes from wherever I find texture, structure and vibrant colour. I see my work as a composed, streamlined and optimistic interpretation of what I see around me. I studied fine art, graphics, photography and animation at college before working in the media industry in London for 10 years. I now teach Art and Design and exhibit and sell my work in the London and Surrey area."
John Stillman was born in Carshalton, Surrey in 1968. He is completely self taught and has been drawing and painting ever since he can remember. John has worked as an illustrator for books and as a graphic artist in advertising in London. He now paints full-time as a professional artist. The many subjects John paints vary from landscapes and scenes of Surrey to marine subjects, concentrating on light and atmosphere. In 2009, John was awarded "the Frank Herring Award" at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters for his painting "Brilliant Light, Richmond". For the second year running John won "the Frank Herring Award" at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters for his painting "Winter Rooftops, Carshalton".
"I have four different sections; painting, pastel, monoprinting and sculpture. They all have links between them but I enjoy the freedom of being able to switch from one discipline to the other. The sculpture and monoprint sections are perhaps the most closely linked in terms of the general humour and light-heartedness. They often inform each other (i.e a monoprint idea can lead to a sculpture or vice versa) and are best viewed together."
" I have been working in the creative media and art industries in a career spanning over 20 years now. My artwork often stems from open-air sketches and first-hand observational drawings, which can be such a rewarding and yet challenging way of working. My work has, over time, become less figurative and more abstract. I have exhibited my work at the Mall Galleries with The Royal Society of British Artists and with the Chelsea and Croydon art societies. I teach art, design and photography at Coulsdon Sixth Form College and have led independent and group workshops for Sutton Arts Council."
