Happy sunny Friday to you all! We are busy unpacking deliveries at the shop today. Have you spotted our new summer home range sneaking its way onto our shelves? We are loving the nautical blue and white trends this year. It takes us back to family holidays, weekends by the sea, ice creams on pebble beaches, childhood crabbing memories and so much more. There's nothing like the British summer time!

We've also been getting excited about CAOS and, if the rate the flyers at the shop are being picked up is an indication - so are you! What is CAOS you ask? We caught up with Helena and Neal Vaughan to find out a little bit more.

How long have you lived in Carshalton and what do you love about living here? We moved to Carshalton in 2004 after finding it by accident! We instantly fell in love with the history and beauty. We love the village community.

What does a typical week look like for you? A typical week for both of us is a combination of teaching art at Coulsdon Sixth Form College, raising our 2 kids, having tea and cake somewhere in the High Street and squeezing some time for artwork! Where did the idea to create 'CAOS' come from? As with many good ideas, the idea for CAOS came from a trip to the pub! We're surrounded by areas with their own open studios and we just thought we needed to do it in Carshalton as we knew there was loads of talent we could pull together for it. Who is CAOS and who is CAOS for? CAOS artists are all based in the Carshalton area and all eager to open their doors to show the public what they do. There's so much creativity going on that we want people to see. So CAOS is for anyone who's interested in seeing what we do and how we do it. We've tried to make it as inclusive as possible including activities for children and families. Local businesses are also getting involved with workshops, displays, special events and sponsorship of the event. There's a special exhibition of artwork at Honeywood Mueum , workshops at the Corner Gallery and other special events at Oaks Park Studios and Dotty's tea rooms . Local businesses such as Calladoodles , STR design and Print and Raff Electrical have helped sponsor the event along with Sutton Council and Arts Network Sutton . Calladoodles will be having a special window display and Stennings Bakery in Carshalton Beeches will also be opening on both Sundays of the event to cater for hungry visitors. CAOS wouldn't otherwise exist without these amazing artists and networks of creative people. When is CAOS? We're opening for two weekends on 24, 25 June and 1, 2 July . Opening hours will generally be 11-5 but check our website for details.

Where can people buy art work by local artists? Some artists will be selling work directly on the day or online. Many will have cards or postcards available to buy either in their studios or in some cases at Calladoodles. Eagle Gallery Framers are very kindly offering a 20% discount on framing of any artwork bought during the event. Of course there's also Calladoodles selling work by both Neal and I, as well as John Stillman, Abel Kesteven and Doug Shaw. What is your favourite part of creating a piece of art? HELENA: My favourite part of what I do is playing around with different materials to get the look I want. I also love the flexibility that photoshop gives me to play around with colours. I can change the whole look with a simple click. NEAL: I love painting or drawing live or plein air, this makes me feel closer to the subject. Then when in the studio I love experimenting with mark making. It's not about the final product it's more about journey.

Any words of wisdom/encouragement for any budding artists out there? HELENA: My advice to budding artists would be to enjoy playing around and finding what works best for you. Be open to ideas, they can come from anywhere! NEAL: Be able to do anything you want to. I have a painting and drawing bag packed and ready to go, so I can just grab and go. Be brave and never think just of the final product, just enjoy creating. Also find other artists, it's a lonely world out there!

We loved last month's series of posts celebrating Independent Retailer Month . If you haven't yet read them, check them out !   This month has been a busy one for us at Calladoodles! To kick things off, we have a few news items to share with you... Firstly, we said goodbye to Rebecca , who has been a part of the team since her early teens. We've loved having her back at the shop over the summer, in between moving into her new flat in Wales and graduating from Aberystwyth University with a 2.1 in English Literature - wow! She will be sorely missed but we wish her all the best!        We've also had some refurbishments done! If you know our shop well, you will know that it has been a bit of a squeeze to fit customers, cards and gifts in there all at once! We are happy to report that we now have a lovely new card wall , which is easier to browse and has freed up a good amount of space for you, your bags, buggies and brollies to browse without fear of knocking the displays or getting stuck in a spinner!       Lastly, we want to thank you all for your patience concerning the technical difficulties we have experienced with our card machine over the summer. The issues have now been fixed and it is up and running again! Phew! In the process of fixing the card machine, we also managed to have our phone line looked at and we are glad to report that we once again have a working land line ! You can now call the shop on 0208 669 6219 as well as emailing us, using the contact form on the website and social media.      Now, onto the fun stuff!     We had a great time photographing some of our home ware range this month. Victoria, Kate & Clare spent an afternoon hanging pom poms, arranging products and snapping some shots. All of the photos from the shoot will be featured on our 'Calladoodles At Home' page very soon so keep an eye out! But for now, here are some sneak previews! As you will see in the photos, and in the shop, we have well and truly caught flamingo fever ! We have mugs  (£8.50),  lights  (£14.95),  tweezers  (£1.95),  lip balm  (£2.95),  make-up bags  (£6.50),  phone power bars  (£11.50),  gift wrap  (£1.75 per sheet),  cushions  (£8.95),  cards  (from £2.50) and more! We know some of you have caught the fever too! Pop in to the shop to browse the full range.

Featured in the photographs are some of our current favourite products. Hanging up are a selection of brightly coloured honeycomb pom pom decorations which start at £6.50 for a pack of three. We love having them hung in the shop and they have brightened up our homes, parties and gardens too!

That's it for August It's been a hot one! Whether you've been away on holiday or enjoying your own back garden, we hope you've had a great summer! Here's to September and all that it brings.   We are looking forward to welcoming our lovely manager, Clare, back from maternity leave. Clare says : " I'm really looking forward to my return to work, I've missed the wonderful Calladoodles staff team, although we have kept in touch and seen each other lots, it's not the same as seeing them every day. I'm loving the improvements that have been made in the shop since I was last working too, like the new card wall that has been built and the new sense of space in the shop, totally buggy friendly! See you all soon! "

      1.          Tell us more about you Why is it when you’re asked these questions, you suddenly forget everything about yourself?! Hmm ok, I’m Kate, my middle name is Georgina and I was born within earshot of the ‘Bow Bells’, which traditionally makes you a true Cockney apparently! I’m married to a fantastic human who is so extraordinarily gracious and loving, I’m the third of four girls and I have three fantastic nieces!

       2.          What is the most exciting thing in your life right now? Being a part of the community in Carshalton Village! There are so many exciting things going on and so many great people and businesses to support and get to know. I’m also excited about YOU, my friends and family. For example, my sisters: Helen is Mum to Amber and is expecting her second child, Amy is an MA at St George’s Pediatric A&E, Lara who works in Learning and Education at the Tower of London and my sister-in-law Rachel who is a teacher and Mum to two incredible girls. And friends who are running eco friendly, award winning recording studios , fair trade coffee houses and charities working with families affected by HIV in Zimbabwe, to mention a few – I could go on. I am so proud of them all and I’m excited to see where life takes each of them. 3.          What is the thing that recently moved you? Goodness, what to choose! I am easily moved – which I used to think was a weakness but now I love that about myself and admire it in others. It’s a gift to be someone who can be moved, to be open to it and to let things change you and help you grow. To be able to step into a moment or a song or situation and to be moved by it is such a gift. I sat in the car with an old friend the other day discussing some experiences she’d had in a mental health sector job she had recently left and my heart ached for her, and the families and individuals she had worked with. We wondered how some things came to be and why people are the way they are. It got me thinking about recent events, heartbreaking stories of violence and anger all over the world, and I was challenged – how do I feel about this? What is my opinion? How will I be changed by this? And it reminded me of a quote from a speech President Bartlett makes in the TV series ‘The West Wing’. He’s responding to a recent bombing in the storyline and he says 'Joy cometh in the morning,' scripture tells us. I hope so. I don't know if life would be worth living if it didn't. And I don't yet know who set off the bomb at Kennison State. I don't know if it's one person or ten, and I don't know what they want. All I know for sure, all I know for certain, is that they weren't born wanting to do this. There's evil in the world, there'll always be, and we can't do anything about that. But there's violence in our schools, too much mayhem in our culture, and we can do something about that...We're (the Government) not doing nearly enough, not nearly enough to teach our children well, and we can do better, and we must do better, and we will do better, and we will start this moment today! They weren't born wanting to do this.”                             4. What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Due to a chronic illness my mornings are usually a bit of a struggle. I try and get up slowly, do some stretching and have a drink and some breakfast to get my body going. My favourite thing to do is open the curtains and breathe in some fresh air. It’s frustrating to start the day in pain each morning, but I try not to let it affect the rest of my day. 5.          Tell us more about your role at Calladoodles? I applied for a temporary job back in October/November 2015 as our manager Clare was going on maternity leave, and I have somehow managed to stay on – which I’m thrilled about. I’m a sales assistant and I’ve also had the pleasure of making the new website, working on a press release with the amazing Angela West (Freelance Journalist and friend of Calladoodles), taking photographs and managing this blog! 6.          What were you doing before working in Calladoodles? I’m a portrait photographer , and that was my main focus before joining the team at Calladoodles. I still run the business alongside working at the shop, I just felt an ache to be a part of the local community and a team wider than myself. I was also ill for a long time, which kept me from engaging with the world outside my window, and now I’m really enjoying juggling the two! The world seems smaller every day.

       7.          What is the best thing about living in Carshalton? The community vibe is incredible and it’s just such a pretty corner of the world. The ponds, the houses, the two beautiful Herons that visit, and every now and then you might even see an artist with an easel capturing an angle you might have missed. How can you not love Carshalton?! 8.          What is the most beautiful thing about the world? Children! Watching them grow and interact with the world around them, seeing the world through their eyes and being taught by them is an amazing experience. I hope I’m blessed with a family myself one day. 9.          What is your favourite food? This is a tough one because I love most food! Right now, I am loving all things coconut and coffee. And curry. Curry is good. 10.       What is your favourite quote? There are so many wonderful words of wisdom being spoken every day, some that shout loudly and others that whisper to you over time. Some that are for a season and some you carry with you for life. Often they are things we hope to be or do and a lot of them seem unattainable, but one that encouraged me lately was a quote by Banksy, it reads ‘ If you get tired learn to rest, not to quit .’ – now that, I can work on.

THE MONTH OF JULY IS INDEPENDENT RETAILER MONTH AND CALLADOODLES ARE GETTING INVOLVED IN THIS ANNUAL CAMPAIGN. TO CELEBRATE, WE INTERVIEWED FOUR WOMEN INVOLVED WITH RUNNING INDEPENDENT SHOPS ON OUR HIGH STREET. THIS WEEK, WE SPEAK TO REBECCA MACKENZIE  - OWNER OF DOTTY'S TEAHOUSE . REBECCA TALKS MOVIES, LEGACY, AND HER TWIN DAUGHTERS.

When was Dotty's Teahouse set up?     Dotty’s Teahouse opened in May 2016 following 4 years of trading at festivals and private events from my vintage caravan “Dotty”. Why was Dotty's Teahouse set up?     Dotty’s Teahouse was a natural progression for me having spent much of 2015 establishing a tea room in Kingston’s famous market place. Originally a Christmas ‘pop-up’  concept championed by Kingston Council we were able to use the opportunity to learn, adapt, and spend time building our brand and perfecting our style.

What should we expect when we visit your cafe?     Dotty’s is a vintage style teahouse serving freshly made food, cakes, cream teas and of course the traditional ‘high tea ’. We are a family friendly café offering mums and local’s a place to meet, eat and shop as we have a lovely selection of handmade gifts which are all sourced from local independents. Dotty’s is a community hub and we are so thrilled that people are enjoying what we have to offer! How has motherhood changed you?        Motherhood has changed me in a lot of ways, some for the better, some for the worse! But like most mothers I am fiercely protective of my children. I think this is mainly because I was very ill during my (twin) pregnancy and there was a serious threat we could have lost them. That thought still haunts me to this day but conversely, it has also been a huge motivating factor and I strive each day to make their little lives as happy and secure as I can.

How do you maintain a work and life balance?        At The moment my work / life balance is a little off kilter… but that’s because I have taken on a huge project with Dotty’s Teahouse  and it is still early days. My girls are hugely involved with the Teahouse and they love helping Mummy when they can, they are learning valuable life skills and whilst that is important I am very conscious that we spend time together as a family and that we have fun! Working, looking after children and running a home is a constant juggling act but I have a very supportive family and we all help each other as much as possible, its teamwork! What is the movie that made you cry the hardest?     Beaches with Bet Midler! It’s an old film about 2 little girls who become friends and go onto to lead separate lives, but one of them dies and it’s so sad…it just gets me every time!! If you ran the world, what law would you introduce?     Be kind to one another. What is your favourite vacation spot?     I love the Cotswolds in Oxfordshire. We visit the Cotswolds as often as we can. It’s such a change of pace, lots of fresh air and lots of beautiful countryside to explore…not to mention the fact that it is home to many beautiful tearooms and I always love to pick up new ideas!

What skills would you like to pass on to your daughters    Oh this is a hard one! I guess it would have to be my determination and self-belief. My mother and father have always said that when I get an idea into my head I do not let it go and whilst this can be infuriating for my long suffering family, I think it’s actually a good attribute to have! I hope my daughters have the confidence and determination to live their life as they wish and fulfil all of their dreams no matter what. What is your favourite food?     I love Chinese food! Definitely my favourite food of all time!       To find more about Dotty's, visit their     Website / Facebook / Instagram.

When did Village Perk open? I first received the keys to the shop 3rd October 2015.  After a few hiccups, we finally opened on the 27th November 2015. Why was Village Perk set up? I have always dreamt of owning my own coffee shop and spent many years looking for the right premises in the right location. Before Village Perk, I was either the second in line or the landlord wasn’t willing to accept new businesses. Finally, we found 7 High Street, Carshalton and our landlord Barry was willing to give us a chance. What should we expect when we visit your cafe? The Village Perk is a bright and airy coffee shop with local artwork and photography. You'll always be greeted with a welcome smile. The Village Perk is Carshalton's dessert destination. Our signature dessert is our "Messy Milkshakes" -  come down and try one! We do fresh waffles and we serve the best Ice-cream in Carshalton.

            Messy Milkshake - Strawberry Shortcake

What is your daily ritual? My ritual is a little crazy and hectic in the mornings like it is for many mums. My husband gets up and leaves early as he is also self-employed so this leaves me as Mummy Major in the morning shouting orders. How has motherhood changed you? My children are what I get out of bed for, they give me a purpose and every day I look at them with amazement that I created them. They give me the drive to succeed at everything I’m doing is for them and their future. How do you maintain a work and life balance? I have an amazingly supportive husband and he helps so much with all the home life. It’s very important to have family time so we always have dinner together and talk about our day. At what age were you the happiest? I don’t think I could say one age that I have been happiest as I have had so many happy times in my life.  Meeting my husband, having children getting married and the list goes on. What one song always makes you dance? I love that song from Twilight.  It makes me want to glide around the room like a ballerina. I cannot dance and would only do it when no one is looking or maybe after a few glasses of Prosecco!

Describe yourself in three words... Determined, loyal and caring What is your favourite food? I love Turkish food. What phrase defines how you live your life? Life always has a habit of working itself out in the end! You can connect with Sam here:    Twitter / Facebook / Instagram .

Mum and daughter team, Liz and Clare, didn’t originally intend to plant roots in Carshalton but found the premises here in 2010 and, as fate would have it, they have made some incredible friendships and absolutely love the village's community. The shop has evolved over the years and is now a vibrant treasure trove of unique gifts and cards fitting for any occasion.      “WE LOVE CARSHALTON AND WE’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT REVIVING THE TRADITIONAL HIGH STREET   SHOPPING  EXPERIENCE”     Calladoodles has its roots based firmly in Carshalton and we are proud to be working hard with neighbouring shops, with whom we re-energised the Traders' Association, to keep Carshalton High Street alive and vibrant. The association, headed up by Andrew Candy from [mind] art gallery and Chris Blanks from Elwyns Windows, works tirelessly on new initiatives, such as Carshalton High Street Market. If you haven't guessed yet, the Calladoodles team is passionate about celebrating and supporting independent retailers and is proud to share the high street with many other award-winning businesses - head on over to Our Community   to find out more about them.   Independent shops play such an important, credible role in the community. They provide high-quality products, along with a fantastic one-to-one service that you often don’t find in bigger retailers FOR NOW, A BIG ' THANK YOU! ' FROM THE CALLADOODLES TEAM FOR DROPPING BY!
