Autumn 2016 Lovely Little Blog Post - Hygge your way into winter
We're getting into the swing of all things autumn here at Calladoodles! Have you noticed our autumn window display? Our new autumn ranges have been making their way into the shop, and if you have popped in recently you would have noticed the arrival of some fantastic new books all about hygge - but more on that later!
Last month, we launched a Casting Call Competition and a whole host of our lovely local customers entered. After announcing Helen Leathem, local mum and Calladoodles customer as our winner, staff member and photographer, Kate, got to work planning the shoot. If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you will have seen a few behind-the-scenes photos and we are so excited to be sharing some of the official shots with you throughout this post.
More photos of Helen modelling our gorgeous autumn range are over on our Calladoodles At Home page.
We decided the shoot should centre around beautiful fairtrade company AURA QUE, whose stunning knitted and felted items are soon to land at Calladoodles. Later on, we interview Laura Queening - the super-creative and talented brains behind the brand, so read on to find out more!
Our warmest congratulations to Helen once again. We absolutely love the photographs and hope you do, too.
1. Calladoodles is Standing Up To Cancer!
We'll be Standing Up To Cancer in the window of our local Cancer Research charity shop at 12pm on Saturday 22nd October. Lots of the high street shops have booked their 15-minute slot over that weekend so do pop down to join in the fun, have a giggle at us and most importantly - donate. We can't wait to see what everyone does with their 15 minutes!
2. The Calladoodles Autumn Sale!
We love a sale here at Calladoodles - who doesn't?! Pop down during the week beginning Monday 24th October and bag yourself a bargain or two.
Let's get back to all things warm and cosy!
Hygge (pronounced Hoo-guh) is the Danish art of cosiness that is taking the world by storm. The author of The Little Book of Hygge (available to buy at Calladoodles) and CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, Meik Wiking, says that hygge can be defined as 'Togetherness, relaxations, indulgence, presence and comfort'.
'You know hygge when you feel it. It is when you are cuddled up on a sofa with a loved one, or sharing comfort food with your closest friends. It is those crisp blue mornings when the light through your window is just right... It all boils down to the pursuit of everyday happiness – the art of creating intimacy to cosiness of the soul to taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things'.
That sounds good to us, Meik!
If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you would have seen this beautiful book, amongst others, in our feed. They have been flying off our shelves so we know you are all eager to begin getting truly cosy this autumn and winter!
Did you know there are different types of hygge or ways of being hygge?
In The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking teaches us that there is a mini hygge language for us to learn! From people outside of the family who dote on, and are more lenient with, your kids than you (hyggeonkel - literally translated as 'uncle of hygge'), and those baggy, old, loose-fitting trousers that you relax in and are your favourite thing to put on, but you would never wear outside of the house (hyggebukser - mine are Harry Potter-themed) to that corner of your house you go to, to breathe and relax and get cosy when there's a storm raging outside (hyggekrog), there's a wealth of hygge lingo that we absolutely love. What's more, to enhance your enjoyment of your new-found cosiness, we have a treasure trove of items to help you embrace everything hygge this winter!
Some of our guaranteed hygge-booster items coming your way this month are the super fairtrade knitted and felted goodies from AURA QUE. We got in touch with the founder and talented designer behind the fashion label, Laura Queening, to find out more about our hottest (and favourite) items making their way to Calladoodles as we speak.
Available to buy at Calladoodles are:
LILA FELT PURSES - £7.95
UDAN KNIT HATS, NIVASI KNIT NECKWARMERS, RAJA KNIT WRISTWARMERS - £19.95 & JANA SLIPPER SOCKS - £22.95
So Laura, first things first, tell us what the meaning is behind the name 'AURA QUE’. Where did that come from?
It's actually part of my name 'Laura Queening' - it may sound French or Spanish, but I pronounce it 'AURA Q’ - as in the letter ‘Q'!
Love it! So tell us, what was the reason behind setting up AURA QUE? How did it all begin?
After volunteering as a teacher in rural Nepal and completing my fashion degree in London, I wanted to combine my love of Asia, seeing new cultures and people and my creative skills by starting my own brand. I sourced and worked with various charity handicraft units and WFTO producer groups in Kathmandu, to bring local materials and designs to western markets. I really enjoy the making process and working with the individual groups in Nepal. I have worked directly with The Nepal Leprosy Trust, where I make most of my leather products, for nine years and I know the producers and their families well from my time spent in Nepal.
Tell us more about you; the person behind AURA QUE...
I live and work in South East London but I love getting out of the city and visiting the coast or travelling abroad when I can! When I'm not working, I try to fit in a bit of yoga and running (not at the same time!) and I also work part-time for textile designer Kaffe Fassett. I've been getting back into my old craft hobbies for that role - sewing, needlepoint and knitting!
That sounds great - a lot of our lovely customers (and staff!) are creative and crafty, too. If you can choose out of all of your beautiful products, what is your current favourite?
I'm usually wearing at least one AURA QUE product! I took the Hava Bag in Black Stripe on my recent holiday, I think it's a great carry-on bag for travels.
It must be hard to choose just one from the amazingly wide and beautiful range you have! So Laura, we are all about hygge this season - can you tell us your favourite way to get cosy during autumn and winter?
With the change of season recently, my Jana Slipper Socks are back out at home and I am looking forward to a night in with a good film! As the days get shorter, I want to make the most of the local Peckhamplex cinema down the road from my studio which shows random arthouse films as well as the blockbusters.
We can't wait for our customers to try out your Jana Slipper Socks! We have them in cream, grey and teal and they'll be going on display very soon! One last question for you before you go, do you have any advice about starting up and/or running your own business?
You have to be passionate about what you do as it is a lot of work! Always keep learning and it's great to have a good support network of friends, family and also mentors and colleagues who run similar businesses to bounce ideas off!
Sage advice there... thank you, Laura!
That's all from us for now!
We'd love to see how YOU hygge - tag us in all of your hygge-related posts on social media!
